Postdoctoral Associate

Position Summary:
The Chemistry department at Virginia Tech invites applicants to apply for a Postdoctoral Associate position with Professor Feng Lin's group (https://chem.vt.edu/people/faculty/flin.html) in the Department of Chemistry. The position will focus on the following:
• Synthesize inorganic electrode materials for rechargeable batteries
• Use the knowledge of kinetics and thermodynamics to study battery behaviors, such as phase transformation, electrode-electrolyte interfacial phenomena
• Perform battery testing and data analysis using cell cycling tests, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
• Use advanced analytical techniques to study materials phenomena during battery operation. In particular, use operando/in situ spectroscopy and imaging techniques based on synchrotron X-rays and electron microscopy
• Use regular analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and so on
• Perform collaborative research with graduate students and scientists at national labs and other universities
• Perform data analysis, write and publish research findings in high-profile peer-reviewed journals and present results at major society conferences

Required Qualifications:
• PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or closely related field
• Good track record of publications in peer-review journals
• Deep knowledge of solid state ionics and X-ray spectroscopy
• Experience with solution synthesis of inorganic materials and their high temperature treatment
• Extensive experience in rechargeable batteries, in particular lithium ion battery system
• Experience with electrode formulation and cell assembly (coin cells)
• Experience with standard electroanalytical techniques and a range of characterization instruments including XRD , SEM , TEM , XPS , TGA , DSC , BET , FTIR , Raman
• Ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment and initiative, as well as to collaborate
• Experience in general battery laboratory equipment operation and maintenance.
• Ability to write manuscripts and publish in peer-reviewed journals

Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge and experience with synchrotron related spectroscopic and diffraction techniques
• Experience with solid state batteries
• Experience with pouch cell assembly
