Early African American History, Assistant Professor

Position Summary:
The History Department at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin in August 2019, for scholars of early African American History. North American geographical focus; chronological range spans from the colonial era through the Civil War; specific area of research focus is open.
The Carnegie Foundation classifies Virginia Tech as a university with "very high research activity," and the History Department also has a strong record of excellence in teaching. The normal teaching load in the History Department is two courses per semester. Members of the department work closely with faculty in transdisciplinary programs, including Women's and Gender Studies, Africana Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and ASPECT /Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought. The department houses the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies (civilwar.vt.edu).

Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in history or a related discipline by the time of appointment
- Ability to teach survey courses in early and modern African American history, and develop new undergraduate and graduate courses
- Record demonstrating potential for excellence in research.
- Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Commitment to engage in a campus community working to grow an inclusive culture and practices while building diversity among faculty, staff, and students
- Strong interest in, and commitment to, working with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching
- Interest in contributing to one or more of the department's strengths in: public history; race and gender; war and society; and the history of science, technology, medicine, and environment.
- Commitment to the use of emerging technology and new media in teaching and research
- Potential for obtaining external funding
