Assistant Dean - School of Arts and Sciences


The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs supports dynamic co-curricular learning and engagement for all undergraduate and graduate students within the School of Arts & Science, the School of Engineering at Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA@Tufts). The department partners closely with colleagues across Division of Student Affairs (Fraternity and Sorority Life, the Group of Six, Community Standards, Residential Life and Campus Life) on a wide variety of campus programs and initiatives. As a central resource that supports the safety, dynamic engagement and wellbeing of all Tufts AS&E students, the Dean s office promulgates community standards; coordinates communication between campus constituencies and departments; supports programs and activities to advance student learning; facilitates the coordinated support of individual students, and; works cooperatively with members of the faculty and the colleges senior leadership team to ensure the successful achievement of institutional and divisional goals, vision, and values.
  • Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs for AS&E, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs will serve as the initial point of contact for students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni, etc, in regard to students of concern;
  • Oversee the assignment, tracking, documentation, and resolution of students of concern cases in consultation with Student Affairs colleagues while maintaining an individual caseload of students;
  • Facilitate Case Management Team meetings on a weekly basis and implement behavioral intervention plans and ongoing follow-up in consultation and coordination with campus and off-campus partners;
  • Function as the primary facilitator of all graduate and undergraduate hospitalizations, and medical leave exit and return requests; track all necessary paperwork in coordination with university Health and Counseling Services, area hospital, treatment centers, and clinicians in private practice; convene the Return from Medical Leave Committee; serve as the primary liaison with colleagues in Health and Counseling Services; and follow up with Academic and Student Affairs departments regarding tuition refunds, holds, course selection, housing needs, student accommodation needs, and other considerations to ease student transition;
  • Assist students of concern with on- and off-campus coordinated medical and mental health care as appropriate in consultation with Health and Counseling Services colleagues by making referrals, following up, and tracking cases until full resolution;
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with a vast network of off-campus medical providers through consultations, referrals, and collaborations;
  • Maintain an updated and informative Student Affairs website on supporting students of concern, medical leaves, hospitalizations;
  • Liaise regularly with Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the SMFA to consult on student cases;
  • Present regular workshops and participate in orientations to parents, faculty, staff, and students to educate Tufts community on supporting students of concern;
  • Manage select conduct cases in consultation with the Director of Community Standards, under the supervision of the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs.
  • Provide training and supervision for the Administrator On-Call program and perform on-call responsibilities throughout the academic year and summer session
  • Perform duties as assigned under the supervision of the Senior Associate Dean of Students.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • Master s degree in higher education, counseling or a related field; familiarity with best practices in student affairs administration at selective colleges and universities.
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in counseling, student affairs, student life or residential life, including administering individual student conduct decisions, supporting students in difficulty, and designing initiatives to promote dynamic co-curricular student engagement.
  • Superior organizational and management skills; excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills; excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with thorough attention to detail and consistency; ability to set and attain goals while working both collaboratively and independently on various projects.
  • Evidence of commitment to social justice and transparency within a community of diverse racial, ethnic, socio-economic, gender, gender expression, and other identities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with young adults, families, faculty, senior administration and staff members within a similar higher education setting is strongly preferred.
  • A thorough understanding of student development and learning theories, best practices, organizational management, and transformational leadership is desirable, as are strong management skills and a solid budgetary background.
  • An understanding of how systems and strategies for campus planning, facilities management, community relations and/or administrative operations impacts students and student affairs on a residential campus is a plus.
  • Experience successfully addressing campus climate issues through co-curricular student-focused programs a plus.
  • Experience supporting innovative student leadership initiatives and developing thoughtful student-faculty-administrative programs preferred.
  • Experience navigating and supporting complex organizational change strongly preferred.
