Position Summary:
Virginia Tech invites applications for one full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position in cybercriminology in the Department of Sociology to begin fall, 2019. Appointment will be at the assistant professor level. Applicants must have the Ph.D. in hand at the start of appointment. We seek a scholar who will contribute to the department's graduate and undergraduate programs, maintain a program of research excellence, and participate in a new university-wide, interdisciplinary initiative (see below). The normal teaching load is two courses each semester.
We seek a scholar with a Ph.D. in sociology, criminology, criminal justice, or justice studies related field with a Ph.D. in sociology preferred. Substantive areas of research within criminology are open; however, preference will be given to those conducting cybercrime research. The person who takes this position will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in cybercriminology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join other cybercrime researchers within the Department of Sociology as well as with other cybercrime and cybersecurity-initiatives across the Virginia Tech campus.
The Department of Sociology grants the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in sociology with options in Africana Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. We also offer an undergraduate major in criminology. The Department of Sociology is the academic home of programs in Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies, and it houses the Center for Race and Social Policy Research and the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention. Cover letters should address explicitly how one's expertise addresses such issues, and candidates should be prepared to teach relevant courses.
