Project Associate-VTTI

Position Summary:
The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Impaired Driving Research, Evaluation, and Analysis ( IDREA ) group at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute ( VTTI ) with research activities and oversight responsibilities. The candidate will also work closely with other domain experts within VTTI to assist in coordinating all activities of projects. The candidate will independently plan, schedule, track, and facilitate multiple research and administrative tasks such as project management services during the conceptual, planning, and execution phases of projects. The candidate will contribute to research proposal development, budgets, timelines, interact with sponsors, and prepare reports and presentations. The ability to simultaneously manage many separate projects and tasks, as well as shift tasks as necessary to address unexpected issues while minimizing disruption to other tasks, is required. The candidate will also be responsible for traveling to off-site locations to manage data collection and trouble-shoot data collection systems, supervise and coordinate a team of experimental staff, train junior experimental staff, recruit, screen, and work with human subjects, prepare the Smart Road or other setting(s) for experiments, and perform other duties in support of conducting research projects. Directions given and received:
The successful candidate will independently perform most assignments after instructions for global objectives and general expected results are provided. Direction, feedback, and communication may occur via email, text message, phone, and/or web conference. The successful candidate may supervise/mentor/provide training and coordinate the work of research assistants, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.
Duties and responsibilities:
-Manage project budgets and timelines to ensure work can be completed without cost overruns or delays
-Responsible for day-to-day project management of multiple projects and administrative tasks
-Participate in working groups as appropriate
-Coordinate, write, review, and contribute to proposals, research plans, progress reports, and final reports
-Organize and participate in meetings within VT and VTTI
-Coordinate and conduct periodic meetings with sponsors and staff (including state or government stakeholders and representatives), take meeting minutes, and track progress and action items
-Collaborate on research studies as assigned, including studies being conducted by the PI
-Coordinate and track the purchase and use of resources.
-Complete other assignments as directed
-Interact with research participants on a project-by-project basis

Required Qualifications:
-Masters degree in Psychology, Business, Public Health, Engineering, Human Factors, or related field that demonstrates an ability to plan and implement research activities efficiently and effectively. An exception for a lesser degree with significant related experience may be considered in lieu of the advanced degree.
-Demonstrated significant project management experience in conducting complex research projects in an academic or industrial environment
-Good writing skills, particularly with respect to report writing and editing
-Creative, independent, and highly motivated, with good communication skills
-Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as within a team
-Strong organizational skills to: 1) facilitate and coordinate completion of multiple tasks and administrative duties, and 2) coordinate personnel, including technicians, researchers, undergraduate, and graduate-level students
-Demonstrated evidence of effective documentation habits
-Handle sensitive data such as biological specimens for drug testing
