Part Time Receptionist- Global Language & Culture Center

Part Time Receptionist- Global Language & Culture Center

(2 Part Time Positions)
Responsibilities:

  • Open and closes the center according to posted hours.
  • Sits at the front desk, ensuring that it is covered at all times, answers GLCC users' questions and directs them to the proper tutor or administrator.
  • Refers visitors to the GLCC director or to a GA when unable to answer their questions.
  • Answers the phone and sorts out the mail.
  • Reminds students to swipe on each visit for accurate data records. When the "swipe" system is out of work, records student attendance and use of center through a sign-in sheet , and enters the data into the system when operational.
  • Assists students with the use of Center equipment and resources.
  • Helps oversee PC use and that all PCs are in working order and checks that users do notdamage anything. Notifies the GLCC director when repairs are needed.
  • Ensures that students do not congregate in room 104, the GLCC lecture hall, when not in use, in order to chat and "hang out".
  • Posts the GLCC weekly agenda on the computer with the large screen in the reception room (room 104) to advertise current cultural and language events.
  • Helps with preparing the center for lecturers' presentations and any event hosted at the center.
  • Is knowledgeable about the GLCC language requirements and policies after proper training.
  • Can identify all instructors from the Department of Languages and Literatures, and the Institute of Asian Studies, knows the language they teach, their office hours and teaching schedule to inform students as needed.
  • Knows the list of language courses that are running each semester, the days , times and location of each class.
  • Helps with the administration of language placement tests and reports individual test results to the various language coordinators for follow-up interviews and final assignation to proper class level.
  • Helps to keep placement tests records, including telephone numbers and email addresses where students can be contacted if needed.
  • Sends a summary of the swipe data of students' use of the center to the GLCC director at the end of each academic semester.


Requirements:

Experience: 0 -2 years

Education: an undergraduate degree. A B.A or B.S. with a language major or minor in French. Italian or Spanish would be considered a plus.

The job is a part-time job, for 9 to 11 months of the year according to need. During the academic year center hours are Monday through Thursday 10 am to 6 pm and Fridays 10 am to 4 pm. Period between semesters and Summer hours will differ according to need.

Computer Skills required:

  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Power Point for the keeping of records, the drafting of schedules, memos and spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of MS Outlook to communicate with instructors and students
