Assistant or Associate Professor of Systems Biology

Position Summary:
The Division of Systems Biology at Virginia Tech (www.ais.science.vt.edu/programs/sysbio.html) is seeking to hire an assistant or associate professor with expertise in mathematical modeling of molecular regulatory networks underlying the physiology of cells and tissues. The faculty appointment will be in the Department of Biological Sciences at our Blacksburg, VA campus, with a start date in August 2019 or shortly thereafter. The Division of Systems Biology resides in the College of Science's Academy of Integrated Science, which works with academic departments campus-wide to develop and support new directions in scientific research and education. The Division offers a unique undergraduate degree in systems biology, and its faculty participate in departmental graduate programs as well as the university's interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Genetics, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology ( GBCB ). Scientists whose work and goals straddle traditional academic boundaries are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in Virginia Tech's Destination Areas.
The responsibilities of a successful applicant will be to maintain a visible and vigorous funded research program; to teach undergraduate systems biology courses and graduate level biological sciences courses; to mentor undergraduate research projects in systems biology and graduate research students in biological sciences and GBCB ; to continue developing his or her professional capabilities and scholarly activities, including participation in professional societies and meetings, curriculum development, participation in department, academy, college, and university governance, and professional service.

Required Qualifications:
Job requirements: Applicants must have demonstrable research experience in molecular systems biology or computational cell biology, including a Ph.D. in a relevant field of science (such as biology, biochemistry, biophysics, applied mathematics, bioengineering, etc.) and postdoctoral experience. We are looking for applicants who are knowledgeable in the use of deterministic, stochastic and hybrid models to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of cellular control systems by analytical and numerical methods, with a strong commitment to biological realism and experimental facts. Additionally, applicants must be dedicated to interdisciplinary education at the undergraduate and graduate level, committed to teaching a student body that is diverse with respect to socio-economic status, interests and abilities, and sensitive to issues of diversity in the university community.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants whose research interests and experience complement the program's excellence in cell cycle dynamics, circadian rhythms, systems immunology, microbial physiology, and infectious disease. Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary teaching and/or research in areas that align with Virginia Tech's university-wide, multi-disciplinary focus, as exemplified by the Destination Areas, will also be of particular interest.
