Maintenance Technician I

Job Summary

Columbus State University has an opening for a Maintenance Technician I. This position performs skilled work using standardized practices in at least one or more of the following trades: electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing. The selected candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of the University's building systems; perform routine preventive maintenance; and provide necessary upkeep and repairs on system equipment, facilities, and grounds. The successful candidate will also be responsible for assisting in other trade specialties as needed.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will work with considerable independence utilizing a variety of general maintenance, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC; repair and maintain doors, floors, windows, partitions, ceilings, and exteriors of buildings; install locks, door knobs, and other building hardware; perform general preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of building HVAC systems and equipment; perform work to underground piping systems including but not limited to domestic water, sewer storm drains, and other similar systems; perform work to building piping including but not limited to industrial and domestic water, sewer and other drain lines, as well as air, gas and vacuum lines; installs conduits, wires, pull boxes, switchboards, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems and low-voltage systems; services, repairs, and maintains lighting and electrical systems as well as some low-voltage; repairs and replaces defective parts in motors, generators, pumps, storage batteries, switchboards, controllers, contactors, switches, and other electrical fixtures and appliances; tests, locates, and repairs electrical trouble in circuits, and equipment; and all other related duties as assigned. The successful candidate will also be responsible for setting goals in an effort to achieve objectives in an efficient and cost effective manner.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); supplemented by skilled worker experience in maintenance or as a helper to a journeyman; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. The selected candidate must possess a considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the skilled trades; possess considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades; possess excellent communication skills as well as the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; possess a valid Driver's License; demonstrate a high priority toward serving both internal and external customers in a courteous and timely manner; possess the ability to follow oral and written instruction as well as the ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams; and possess a demonstrated ability to supervise external contractors. The successful candidate must also possess the ability to problem solve, actively support group decisions, and promote cooperation and understanding in a respectful manner.

The selected candidate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally be exposed to various weather conditions and will be required to actively participate in on-call after hours duties on a rotation-basis as assigned.

Proposed Salary

The annualized salary range for this position is $25,000 - $30,000.
