Visiting Assistant Professor


The Department of Geography, University of Connecticut, invites applications for a one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Geographic Information Science (GIS) starting in August 2019. The position is renewable annually subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance. This position will contribute to our Geographic Techniques curriculum, which includes cartography, visualization, and other GIS courses.

The Department of Geography has 18 faculty members, and is poised to expand further as the university consolidates its position as the best public university in New England and one of the top 20 public universities nationwide. The department is seeking to build on its core strengths of spatial analysis of social issues, geographic information science and systems, earth system science, and human-environment dynamics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A PhD in Geography or a closely related field, or a master's degree and significant industry experience, by the start date of employment. ABD candidates will be considered. The candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to quality undergraduate education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Expertise in GIS and an outstanding record of and commitment to effective teaching; integrating technology into instruction; the ability to contribute through teaching and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience. Experience teaching different levels of GIS courses for both undergraduate and graduate curriculum is preferred. For example, teaching the core introductory Mapping and GIS courses, and advanced courses in GIS (e.g. GIS programming).

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 2019. The teaching load will be 6 to 7 courses per year. The successful candidate's appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
