Announcement is hereby made for a 12-month Professional Assistant 1 position that is grant-funded. Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.

 

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College. This position is funded by a New York State grant.  In a grant-funded position, the successful candidate will be employed for periods concurrent with the grant award; however such employment may be terminated at any time.  This is a grant-funded position with the possibility of yearly extensions through June 30, 2020.  Please see the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement for complete details with regard to grant-funded positions.

 

Job Description:

The Professional Assistant 1 for Continuing Education reports to the College Assistant Dean for Continuing Education.  The PA1 will be working in a team environment to provide assistance in the recruitment, enrollment and retention of Science and Technology Entry Level Program (STEP) and Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) students.   Specifically, the successful candidate will have specialized knowledge of STEP and CSTEP grant programs, a strong background in assisting students performing original STEM research, five years of experience mentoring underrepresented middle/high school and college students, and will:

 

  1. Coordinate,andparticipateinthedevelopmentoftheScienceandTechnologyEntryProgram (STEP),andtheCollegiateScienceandTechnologyEntryProgram(CSTEP)programs;

  2. Supervise clerical, and other STEP officestaff;

  3. Assistinthedevelopment andimplementationofstrategiesforrecruitmentandenrollment fornew students and retention of continuingstudents;

  4. Assist in periodic program staffmeetings;

  5. Assist in the development and maintenance of program operatingbudgets;

  6. Work closely with school districts,  collaborating  Suffolk County Community College departments  and  offices,  collaborating colleges and universities and Brookhaven National Laboratory and other STEM institutions to deliver collaborative program services;

  7. Deliver research and work closely with business and industry partners to develop, implement and deliverscienceresearchandworkforce-relatedprogramming,suchasinternshipsandjob-shadowing experiences;

  8. Assistwiththeadmittanceandenrollmentofpre-collegeprogramstudentstoSuffolk County Community Collegeandthetransfer of CSTEP students to four-yearschools;

  9. Assistwiththeassessmentoftheeffectivenessofprogrammatic goalsandstaffinvolvementin accordance with program guidelines and expected outcomemeasures;

  10. Prepare comprehensive mid-year and final reports for submission to NYSEDagencies;

  11. Ensure compliance with all program funding and reportingguidelines;

  12. Purchaseinstructionalmaterialsandofficesuppliesasrequiredandmaintainprogram budgets;

  13. Represent STEP and CSTEP at local, regional and statewidemeetings;

  14. AssistinthepreparationandsubmissionofRFP'srelatedtoSTEPandCSTEP

  15. UndertakeotherdutiesasassignedbyCollegeAssistant Dean/Pl.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in aSTEM-related field;

  • Strong background in assisting students performing original STEMresearch;

  • Proficiency with MicrosoftOffice; and

  • Minimum offiveyearsmentoringunderrepresentedmiddle/highschooland collegestudents conducting STEM research.

Preferred:

  • Minimum five years of scientific research
