Communications Specialist

Position Summary:
The College of Engineering is looking for a 1500 hour Communications Specialist. This position will provide support in multiple aspects of college communications, to include social media, storytelling, and media relations. The specialist will write copy for VT News, the alumni magazine, social media, and web. In alignment with the university master brand, the specialist will be responsible for managing College of Engineering social media platforms under the direction of the communications director and digital communications and marketing manager. The specialist will track the college's external media placements and compile reports. The specialist will other tasks as assigned that align with the college's communications goals.

Required Qualifications:
- Previous work experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field
- Skill in managing social media platforms
- Knowledge/Understanding of digital platforms and audience
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to plan and organize and work independently and deliver products on schedule
- Ability to work in a fast-paced office with frequent short-notice deadlines
- Ability to monitor, measure, and report on external media clippings
- Ability to define goals and objectives, identify target audiences, and develop and implement strategic plans to accomplish and measure progress towards communications goals

Preferred Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree or equivalent level of training/experience in communications, public relations, journalism, English, or related field
- Experience with software such as Adobe Creative Cloud
- Photography experience
- Experience communicating complex subject matter to nontechnical audiences
- Knowledge of the university's style guide and/or AP style and best practices for social and brand awareness
- Familiarity with content management systems, web platforms, social media competencies to include analytics
