Postdoctoral Associate

Position Summary:
This position will involve collaborative research on developing approaches for computationally-driven experimental biology. The post-doctoral associate will develop network-based and data mining methods to analyze high-throughput datasets in the context of the following projects:
(i) Develop methods to dramatically scale up the development of mathematical models of biological processes
(ii) Create new hypergraph-based representations and algorithms for analysis of cellular pathways
(iii) Signaling networks in host-microbiome-parasite interactions
The research will involve developing models, algorithms, and software for these projects in order to prioritize new experiments and to incorporate data from the resulting experiments in order to refine the computational approaches. The associate will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty in the Departments of Computer Science, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, and the Center for Systems Biology of Engineered Tissues at Virginia Tech. The associate will be expected to contribute significantly to these research projects, to prepare the results for publication and presentation, to help supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and to contribute to grant proposals.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in computer science, bioinformatics, systems biology or a related field of science and engineering, with a strong computational background.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Track record of publications in bioinformatics, computational biology, or systems biology.
- Expertise in network biology, data mining, and/or machine learning
- Creativity, independence, and high motivation for interdisciplinary research
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as within a research group
- Evidence of good project management skills
