Position Summary:
We are currently seeking to fill a position for a Pre-Award Associate to support research in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies ( CAUS ) in developing competitive proposals for sponsored funding in support of research, technical assistance, and capacity building projects.
This position serves as the liaison between faculty and the Office of Sponsored Programs ( OSP ) by providing assistance in identifying funding opportunities and oversight with policies and procedures concerning sponsored research.
The successful candidate will:
• Work directly with faculty in the preparation of grant proposals and budgets that meet resource needs of the proposed research and the requirements of the potential funding agencies.
• Prepare proposal forms and documents as required by funding agencies and university/ departmental guidelines, provide solicitation requirement outlines to faculty members responsible for proposal preparation, ensure time lines are observed, and confirm that solicitation requirements are met.
• Stimulate the formation of research teams by fostering social and professional links among researchers.
• Assist with other pre-award functions as necessary to ensure timely and accurate proposal submission.
• to communicate effectively across faculty and staff while managing multiple time sensitive tasks.
• exercise judgement within defined policies and procedures, and determine appropriate action required in order to bring funding opportunity to fulfillment.
This position will routinely monitor, track, and report on meeting established goals and metrics related to sponsored programs. Initially, this position will report directly to the Director of the School of Public and International Affairs and the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or significant training and experience which equates to an advanced degree
Extensive experience in support of grant preparation and sponsored program support
Demonstrated process management and communication skills
Significant experience and knowledge of federal, state and nonprofit grant funding opportunities and processes
Experience in the submission, management, and negotiation of complex grants and contracts, including preparing budgets and other supporting documents
Demonstrated experience in setting priorities, managing tasks, and meeting deadlines
Demonstrated leadership, independent initiative to interpret and apply federal regulations, policies, and procedures in a university or an agency funding or conducting research
Demonstrated experience of building process and strategies and working with faculty to facilitate efficient and effective research administration and/or funding applications
Demonstrated experience in generating documents and reports using various database and spreadsheet software programs such as Word, Excel, and financial database and warehouse systems
Proven ability to cultivate positive working relationships, foster teamwork, and support collaboration
Previous experience in submitting large proposals involving complex budget
Demonstrated record of strong work ethic

Preferred Qualifications:
Professional designation such as Certified Research Administrator ( CRA ), Certified Professional Contracts Manager ( CPCM ), Certified Federal Contracts Manager ( CFCM ) or other related professional certification
Extensive experience working in a multi-investigator, multi-institution research environment
Experience in a research university setting involving proposal development and/or grant and contract management and administration
Excellent writing, analytical and reasoning skills
Previous experience with Banner Finance, Microstrategy Finance, Summit, Cost Share Tracker, and PAN systems
Previous knowledge of operations and functions of Virginia Tech's Office of Sponsored Programs
Practical experience in interpretation and application of federal opportunity announcements and research policies and procedures
