Benefits Specialist

Serve as a Benefits Specialist in support of the benefits function in the Department of Human Resources. Counsel and advise employees on health care options, retirement plans, Worker's Compensation, the Family Medical Leave Act ( FMLA ), the Return to Work Program and the University tuition assistance programs. Provide benefits information and assistance to include availability, eligibility and problem resolution.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
Significant Knowledge of human resources practices and principles including retirement plans. Working knowledge of FMLA , HIPAA , COBRA , and Worker's Compensation. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply HR policies and procedures. Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel and Power Point. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and to work independently. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service in a fast-paced environment.

Level and type of experience
Significant related experience in employee benefits administration. Considerable experience with processing human resources related programs.

Preferred knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification
Some knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia benefits programs such as Commonwealth of Virginia retirement plans and tax sheltered annuities. Working knowledge of Banner, PMIS / BES , UNUM , Workers Compensation, and VRS Navigator System. Experience in a higher education setting. Graduation from a college or university with major coursework in human resources or related field; equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted.
