THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO (UCSD), DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY (http://www.surgery.ucsd.edu), AND RADY CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF SAN DIEGO (http://www.rchsd.org ) are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. We are seeking academic physicians at the assistant or associate rank to join the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

The prospective surgeon would become part of our integrated multidisciplinary Heart Institute and would support the director of cardiothoracic surgery in the continued evolution of this regional congenital heart surgery initiative.

Rady Children's is the largest free-standing children's hospital in California with a total of 551 active beds and is affiliated with the University of California at San Diego. The Heart Institute is one of the core initiatives at Rady Children's and is composed of 30 physicians and supported by roughly 100 staff. The program provides all levels of congenital heart care ranging from the fetus to the adult including transplant, at 2 main sites that include Rady Children's Hospital and the University of California at San Diego. The program has a fully staffed and devoted pediatric cardiac intensive care unit/inpatient unit that provides 24/7 in-house attending level coverage. In 2017 the program was ranked by U.S. News and World Report in the top 20 and performed a total of 500 operations at Rady Children's with 300 of those being STS index cases. The congenital heart surgeon's support another 50 to 100 adult congenital operations performed at UCSD university hospital with the adult team. The ideal candidate will be at the beginning of their career but candidates with special skills in congenital heart failure/transplant/mechanical assist, adult congenital, or research will be considered.

Qualified candidates must have an MD and be a diplomat of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, have graduated from an approved ACGME congenital heart fellowship and be congenital heart surgery sub specialty board eligible/certified. They must also be able to obtain an unrestricted medical license in the state of California and must have permanent US residency status.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.
