The Department of Anesthesiology (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/som/anesthesia/Pages/default.aspx) at the University of California San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and seeks a Project Scientist.

As a Project Scientist, you will be responsible for the design, execution, and interpretation of scientific research experiments related to animal models of shock and metabolic diseases. In addition, the candidate will lead the in vitro research efforts aimed at elucidating basic mechanisms affecting the pathophysiology of shock and obesity. Opportunities for collaborative research will be available. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to participate in and develop research protocols, establish independent funding, scholarly and creative activity.

Candidates must have an MD or PhD or MD/PhD with an emphasis relevant to the field of shock and inflammation. Candidates with an MD must be board certified/eligible in internal medicine and be eligible for a California Medical License.

Candidates with experience with animal models of the metabolic syndrome and shock, specifically diet-induced and the db/db model for genetic obesity, and septic and hemorrhagic shock models; and experience in studying signal transduction, specifically the leptin/leptin-receptor pathway. Additionally, knowledge of MS-MS techniques and data analysis and proficiency in molecular biology techniques to manipulate genes both in vitro and in vivo, including experience with virus delivery of shRNA to target cells in the hypothalamus are preferred.

In addition experience in various imaging techniques including confocal microscopy and in situ enzyme activity assays, proficiency in laboratory techniques to study enzyme activity and protein expression; and the ability to independently design and execute both in vitro and in vivo studies, able to interpret experimental data and present at scientific meetings with a proven track record of high impact publications and the ability to write grants and scientific manuscripts for peer review are strongly preferred.

Appointment will be at Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist level based on background and years of experience. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
