Position Summary:
The Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering ( AOE ) invites applications for an open rank faculty position (full, associate or assistant professor) in aerospace propulsion effective August 2019. The position will be filled, depending upon qualifications, at a rank commensurate with experience. Exceptional candidates may be additionally considered to receive the Crofton Faculty Fellowship in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering.
The search seeks applicants from a broad range of fundamental and applied specializations in aerospace propulsion systems including, but not limited to, aerothermodynamics/combustion diagnostics, nonequilibrium and reacting flows, high speed aerothermodynamics (transonic through hypersonic), combustion, multiphase flows, propellants, and aeroacoustics. Research in emerging and rapidly developing areas, with the potential to transition and impact real-world aerospace and ocean engineering systems, is particularly valued.
Candidates are sought who have a vision for actively pursuing new, collaborative research thrusts at the Advanced Propulsion and Power Laboratory ( APPL , http://aoe.vt.edu/appl), a $4M state-of-the-art laboratory opened in 2015. The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty members in the APPL , but will have their primary appointment in the AOE department that is comprised of about 3 dozen faculty members, 175 full-time graduate students, and 500 undergraduate students. The candidate may contribute to the department's existing collaborations including particularly the Center for Renewable Energy and Aerodynamic Technology (CREATe, https://create.centers.vt.edu/), as well as the Hume Center for National Security and Technology (www.hume.vt.edu), the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (www.ictas.vt.edu) and the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research (Space@VT, www.space.vt.edu). Candidates are also expected to contribute to teaching Aerospace or Ocean Engineering subjects at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The selected candidate will join an exemplary group of educators and researchers engaged in devising creative solutions for some of the most pressing problems facing society, and in generating game-changing knowledge and technologies that differentiate AOE from peer institutions in the eyes of all stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. degree in engineering is required.
Candidates for this position should be capable of initiating new research programs in areas that support the development of aerospace and/or ocean systems. They should help recruit, and then guide and mentor, graduate students to conduct research. Candidates shall teach relevant Aerospace or Ocean Engineering subjects at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
