Postdoctoral Associate

Position Summary:
The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech is looking for a highly motivated candidates for a Postdoctoral Associate position. The successful candidate is expected to work independently to accomplish research projects related to infectious disease, particularly mosquito transmitted viruses. The research project will involve generating recombinant cDNA clones for several viruses in the alpha- and flavivirus genera. In addition, work will involve novel approaches to assessing virus adaptation in different environments and work will include both in vitro and in vivo work. The candidate will be expected to work with cell culture, mice and mosquitoes, experience in one or several of these is highly desired. This position will work in collaboration with researchers at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France on a large multi-center project. The Postdoc's primary duties will include cell culture, qPCR, molecular biology, mouse studies, mosquito infections and some bioinformatics/data analysis. Manuscript preparation and grant/fellowship applications will also be conducted. The candidate will also be expected to attend lab meetings, maintain laboratories in a clean and good working order and maintain a high level of organization. In addition, ordering lab supplies and working with technicians and undergraduate students will be essential. The candidate is expected to be able to work effectively in a team.

Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a PhD or MD/PhD degree in microbiology, virology, biological sciences, immunology or related field. Qualifications include but are not limited to small animal manipulations, animal colony maintenance, mosquito rearing and infections, performing cell culture experiments, cloning, tissue harvesting, qPCR, Western Blot analysis, data collection and analysis, and laboratory organization. Must be highly self-motivated after initial supervision, willing to learn new experimental skills, and to work individually and collaboratively with a variety of individuals for more than one projects simultaneously. Must be proficient in animal studies. Must be able to safely move and handle up to 40 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with small animal manipulations, qPCR, cell line maintenance and infections, cloning, data analysis and data preparation for publication. Excellent scientific writing and manuscript preparation required
