Assistant VP for Planning and University Architect

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer, the Assistant Vice President for Planning and University Architect has a leadership role in matters of campus aesthetics and the preservation of Virginia Tech's architectural heritage.
Leading a team of nearly 20 employees, the position is responsible for providing guidance through the professional disciplines and core competencies of architectural design, campus planning, campus design standards, land planning/landscape architecture, space planning and analysis, and real estate management.
This is a highly visible position that interacts with top-level administration of the university in strategic planning, long-range physical planning and development, and advancement of the capital outlay program for the future benefit of the university. This position is responsible for developing and implementing the Campus Master Plan, coordinating university efforts to assure that facility and space needs are being met, supporting compliance and aspirational efforts associated with accessibility and inclusion, ensuring that the direction of capital project program planning is integrated with long range physical planning, and overseeing all university real estate transactions.
This position will be responsible for providing effective vision, leadership and strategic direction for the development and management of new space management policies and planning, as well as cultivate an appreciation among institutional leadership the importance of the university effectively managing its space. This position also supports the Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer in the development of all off-campus real estate needs and strategy for the immediate and long-term requirements of university academic and administrative units.
The Assistant Vice President will also provide direct oversight of special projects, the development of strategic presentations, unit reporting, and may be required to represent the Chief Facilities Officer in meetings.

Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Architecture or a related field; or education and work experience that equates to an advanced degree.
- Registration or demonstrated ability to be registered as an architect in Virginia within 12 months.
- Significant experience with architectural design, planning, budgeting, fiscal administration, people management, and client management.
- Experience should demonstrate a broad understanding of public sector or higher education business issues and planning mechanisms.
- Experience researching and preparing technically complex executive level documents, position papers, reports, proposals, and presentations on a variety of strategic topics.
- Demonstrated commitment to data-driven decision making and the use of key performance indicators in the execution (development, analysis, corrective action, communication, and pursuit and provision of feedback) of tactical, operational, and strategic responsibilities.
- Exceptional communication skills, interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and the ability to effectively interact and build trusted relationships with diverse internal and external constituencies.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects; excellent organizational, leadership, and delegation skills; and ability to work collaboratively. Must have strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills to manage complex tasks and/or those that require balancing competing interests.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with ability to see patterns, be a fast thinker, and make decisions with strong attention to accuracy, detail, and local context.
- Demonstrated patience, reliability, composure, and stability under pressure, with experience handling confidential/sensitive matters and a strong personal ethics commitment.
- Demonstrated commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Knowledge of accessibility issues and planning mechanisms specific to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ( ADA ) and Universal Design.
- Extensive leadership and team-building skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to travel to on-campus and off-campus facilities sites, with occasional overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Managerial experience in several of the following areas: architectural design, planning, land planning/landscape architecture, space management, and/or real estate management.
- Understanding of construction processes, procedures, and methods.
- Understanding of leasing principles, practices, and law including contract writing and interpretation.
- Experience negotiating agreements with demonstrated communication and negotiation skills with the ability to bring parties to a consensus.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all phases of master planning, long-range development planning, and space planning.
- Additional degree or advanced certification in Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- Proficient with facilities related software and enterprise systems.
