Laboratory Specialist

Position Summary:
The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Specialist for well established Orthopedic Research Laboratory investigating the use of mesenchymal stem cells and progenitor cells in tissue engineering and repair. Specific interests include tendon regeneration, ligament healing and cartilage repair as well as elucidating differences between stem cells isolated from different tissues. We also are investigating the anti-inflammatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells. A qualified candidate will be responsible for the following under the guidance and supervision of the PI: general laboratory maintenance; equipment maintenance; enforcing lab safety policies; ordering supplies; training and supervising students; stocking and maintenance of cell culture archive; assisting students with their experiments; performing experiments; and writing thorough descriptions of experiments. Techniques utilized include: tissue sample collection from animals; tissue processing; primary mammalian cell culture; flow cytometry; RNA and DNA purification; gel electrophoresis; real time PCR ; gene cloning; sequence verification; Western blotting; ELISA ; histology; transfection; radioisotope use; literature searches; and data description and analysis.

Required Qualifications:
BS in biological sciences or related field. Experience working in a research laboratory. Experience performing the following: sterile technique; mammalian tissue cell culture; transfection; flow cytometry; ELISA ; DNA and RNA isolation; PCR ; real-time PCR ; primer/probe design; Western blot; and data analysis. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong organization skills and thorough note-taking experience. High attention to detail. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Good English language skills (spoken and written). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to provide leadership in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
MS in cell and molecular biology or related field. Experience working with laboratory research animals (rodents, farm animals and companion animals). Experience teaching laboratory techniques.
