Assistant Professor - Landscape Environmental Stewardship

The Department of Horticulture of the College of Agriculture at Auburn University is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor - Landscape Environmental Stewardship. This position will be a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position with a 60% research and 40% teaching appointment. The projected start date is August 16, 2019.

Responsibilities: The selected individual will develop and implement a nationally recognized, vigorous research program addressing relevant environmental challenges associated with the diverse planted landscapes in Alabama and with broader application to the southeastern U.S. region. Research topics could include but are not limited to irrigation/water use, plant cultivar innovations or applications, pest management strategies, etc. The selected individual will be expected to secure extramural funding to support programs and summer salary, publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, communicate and disseminate research results to appropriate industry constituencies, and successfully direct graduate students. The selected individual will be expected to function effectively on multi-disciplinary teams, and, as appropriate, develop collaborative relationships with relevant industry representatives and faculty in the department, college, university and region. The selected individual will have responsibility in both undergraduate and graduate instruction with an emphasis on landscape environmental stewardship and promoting and further developing best management practices in the established landscape environment. Teaching responsibility includes at least 10 hours of instruction during the academic year. This equates to teaching two courses and overseeing the horticulture internship course. The selected individual will be expected to recruit, train, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Departmental, college, and university committee service is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Horticulture or closely related plant science discipline by the position start date. The selected individual should have a strong horticultural foundation with knowledge and background in landscape ecology, landscape environmental management or similar subject matter area. Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research and/or teaching resulting in peer-reviewed publications is required. The selected individual should be able to demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues across disciplines and develop a collaborative research program. The selected individual must possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences. The selected individual must meet eligibility requirements to be gainfully employed in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and to continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge and experience in the application of landscape best management practices; successful competitive grant-writing experience; experience in developing new and/or teaching undergraduate courses in horticulture or plant sciences; and advising students both at the graduate and undergraduate level.
