Honors Faculty in Industrial Design

Position Summary:
The Virginia Tech Honors College (http://www.honorscollege.vt.edu) is developing the Calhoun Honors Discovery program: a signature program on collaborative transdisciplinary learning focused on technology innovation for societal impact. The program was established by a founding gift from David Calhoun. The program also leverages significant industry support and participation.
The Discovery program will be developed and realized by a faculty cohort that includes: dedicated Honors College faculty, professors of practice from industry and affiliated faculty from collaborating Departments at Virginia Tech. As part of building this faculty cohort, the Honors College and the School of Architecture + Design seek a versatile instructor with a background in industrial design. Applicants should possess an interest in developing educational modules on design topics for non-design majors, working in interdisciplinary teams with industrial design majors, and researching and advancing transdisciplinary problem solving and learning with industry participation. Applicants should have experience in industrial design and project based learning.
This is a professor of practice position at the rank of assistant or associate professor with an initial three year renewable contract (non-tenure). The appointee will mentor highly motivated Honors students, teach honors courses, lead collaborative problem solving studios and related undergraduate research, collaborate with the industry partners of the program and contribute to the overall development of Discovery program and the Honors College. The appointee will be expected to participate in college- and university-level service, committee work, and other duties as assigned, and to pursue a program of personal research, that engages aspects of collaborative, transdisciplinary teaching and learning. Each Discovery Program Faculty will hold affiliate status with one of the core participating departments in the Discovery program. The appointee in this position will hold an affiliate status with the School of Architecture + Design and facilitate the connections of the School to the Program.

Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in industrial design or closely related field and extensive industry experience OR a terminal degree in design and some industry experience
A demonstrated track record of teaching collaborative courses in the studio environment and/or proven track record of working in a design consultancy environment.
A strong record of academic or professional accomplishments and the proven ability to work collaboratively as a designer in an interdisciplinary team.
Proven ability to teach undergraduate courses in both thematic and methods topics.
Experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction and a willingness to cross disciplinary boundaries to address complex societal challenges in a transdisciplinary manner.
Demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduate students in developing interdisciplinary capacities

Preferred Qualifications:
Expertise as part of an interdisciplinary design team with collaborators from fields such as technology, business, and social sciences.
Expertise in project based learning, interdisciplinary studio based instruction and design education
Research experience in inter- and transdisciplinary learning or product development experience in design consultancy context.
A desire to advise and teach a highly motivated student body drawn from a broad spectrum of disciplines and from diverse backgrounds
An interest in professional ethics and social responsibility
Experience working with a dynamic, diverse, and highly motivated undergraduate student body drawn from a broad spectrum of disciplines
A commitment to diversity in the university community
Experience in industry collaborations
