The Division of Mass Communication is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Mass Communication, specifically to support the B.S. in Journalism degree program, commencing September 1, 2019.

The Journalism Program of the Division of Mass Communication delivers a BS in Journalism. Faculty focus on key areas of skill development in writing for various media as well as an intellectual grounding that enables students to ask informed questions, to evaluate evidence for competing sources, facts and theories, to think critically, to work ethically, and to produce stories. Responsibilities

This is a teaching focused position (teaching 12 credit hours per semester) with opportunities for a reduction in course load for research. Research, industry involvement and productivity are essential as is a strong commitment to student engagement. Division faculty are expected to participate in academic advisement, student mentoring, academic assessment and other activities as required by the Chair and/or Dean.

Qualifications

A doctoral degree in journalism or a closely related field is required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate active scholarship as well as a knowledge of and experience in the practice of journalism. The candidate should have a strong research agenda in traditional and/or current journalism trends such as multimedia journalism, smartphone journalism, citizen journalism, applying data journalism and social media. The candidate should be able to show a keen interest about the future of journalism along with the evolution of news media technology and should demonstrate their teaching ability at the college level in or related to these areas. The candidate should be experienced and comfortable using contemporary instructional technologies.
