Director, Perioperative Services

This position is Open Until Filled

This position will oversee and manage the anesthesia service, surgical service, and sterile processing for both large and small animal at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Perioperative services refers to oversight of the process before operation, during operation, and after operation encompassing all of these areas. The Director of Perioperative Services will be in charge of supervising, scheduling, training and evaluating at least 15 staff in the surgical and anesthesia areas of both the small and large animal hospital.

The job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: schedule regular training and staff development, mentor and encourage staff to obtain further certification in anesthesia and surgery; partner with faculty to determine the needs of the area and work to formulate a plan to address these needs and implement as necessary; ensure a cohesive team approach to patient care that melds both anesthesia and surgery; supervise the anesthesia service in both large and small animal; ensure technicians are cross trained and there is adequate coverage; directly supervises Lead Technician in small animal; supervise the small animal surgical team and coordinate the operations of the OR; coordinate the sterile processing functions for both large and small animal hospitals; manage inventory and ordering for both large and small animal to ensure that we have the appropriate supplies and we manage them in a cost effective and fiscally responsible manner; coordinate the OR functions and staff for large animal including surgical and sterile processing technicians; directly supervise a supervisor over the OR, lead anesthesia technician, and 4-5 other staff members and indirectly supervise approximately 15 additional individuals; coordinates functions and operations of surgery from pre-operative care all the way through post-operative care to ensure efficiency and patient safety; triage and coordinate the day to day flux of patients to ensure that everyone's needs are met; manage all aspects of staffing for technicians to provide surgical and anesthesia coverage on an "on call" basis 24/7 which will include management of schedules, time sheets, and hiring and firing of employees; oversee finances, payroll, human resources, and management of the surgery and anesthesia areas; create and oversee a cohesive billing and charge structure that encompasses surgery, anesthesia, and sterile processing, as well as inventory management.

Minimum Qualifications
Entry into the applicant pool requires an Associate's degree or vocational certificate in the field of Science, Animal Health, Healthcare or a closely relevant field; eight (8) years of experience working as a clinician/technician in a clinical environment, either veterinary or human medicine; two (2) years of experience supervising full time employees; knowledge of medical or veterinary practice procedures; and knowledge of procedures and techniques associated with animal care. Employer will consider advance degrees in lieu of experience.

Desired Qualifications
Desired qualifications include advanced degrees in Health Care Administration and experience overseeing surgical areas; RN or LVT; experience in surgery or anesthesia.
