Requirements
• PhD in Chemistry or Science/Chemical Education required.  
• Ability to teach undergraduate general chemistry and science pedagogy courses and laboratories.  
• Experience with pre-service teachers a plus. 
• Interest in supervising and supporting undergraduate research preferred.
• Assist the department with recruiting and advising students.
 
General Information
• Position will start in either January or August of 2019.
• Faculty contracts are for nine months.
• The normal teaching load per semester for full-time faculty is 12 contact hours per week.
• Health and retirement benefits are provided.
• Summer employment is optional under a separate contract and is dependent upon student enrollment.
 
Department
The Department of Physical Sciences is housed in a modern science facility that was completed in 1997, which it shares with the Department of Biology.  The Department currently employs 12 faculty members, eight in Chemistry, three in Physics and one in Environmental Science.  Instruments available in the Department include Atomic Emission - Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry (Potentiometry, Electrogravimetry, Coulometry, Voltimmetry), Fourier Transform - Infrared Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectroscopy, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Molecular Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet - Visible Spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform - Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.
 
The University
Lander University has been providing educational and cultural opportunities since its founding in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Williamston, S.C. The college moved to Greenwood, SC, in 1904 and was renamed Lander in honor of its founder, Samuel Lander. It became part of the state system of higher education in 1973. Lander is now a SACSCOC accredited, coeducational, state-assisted, comprehensive, regional, four-year university with traditional liberal arts and science programs, and professional programs in business, education and nursing.
 
Location
The city of Greenwood has a population of 23,000 with a county population exceeding 70,000. Greenwood is located in the Piedmont of western South Carolina, just 2-4 hours from the beautiful South Carolina beaches or the Blue Ridge Mountains. Outdoor teaching and research opportunities abound in the vicinity. South Carolina is home to a variety of local, state, and federal parks and recreation areas.  Lake Greenwood, an 18 mile long reservoir, is eight miles away from campus and has been the site of several water and sediment quality studies and ecological studies involving students.  Lander owns a forested site of approximately 40 acres adjacent to Table Rock State Park, in the mountains of South Carolina.  The Table Rock location is approximately 1.5 hours away from campus.
 
Campus
Lander is situated on an attractive, largely wooded campus of approximately 123 acres within walking distance of uptown, with a vibrant community including a museum, community theater, an arts center, shopping and restaurants.  In addition to six major buildings erected since 1973, campus improvements have included extensive renovations to older facilities, new housing complexes, new athletic complex, all with abundant parking.  
 
Students
Enrollment is approximately 3,000 with a student body representing 29 states and 17 foreign countries.  A large proportion of the students come from the seven county region around Greenwood.  Minorities make up 33% of the student body; 67% of the student body is female and 33% is male. Campus residence halls accommodate approximately 1,400 students.
 
Faculty
Lander has a student/faculty ratio of 14:1 with 137 full time faculty members, the majority of whom hold terminal degrees in their disciplines. Average class size is 22.
