Postdoctoral Associate, Tonegawa Lab

Working at MIT offers opportunities, an environment, a culture - and benefits - that just aren't found together anywhere else. If you're curious, motivated, want to be part of a unique community, and help shape the future - then take a look at this opportunity.

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Picower Institute for Learning and Memory-Tonegawa Lab , to participate in neuroscience research of learning and memory in rodent models. The primary planned research projects are targeted to the elucidation of molecular, cellular, and neuronal circuit mechanisms and dynamics of memory engram cells underlying the formation, storage, and retrieval of recently and remotely formed memory. For this purpose, a variety of molecular, cellular, genetic, in vivo and in vitro electrophysiological techniques as well as 2-photon microscopic imaging of head fixed live mice and micro-endoscopic imaging of freely behaving mice will be employed.

During the past thirty years, the Tonegawa Lab has contributed to the research in this field by developing and using state-of-the art technologies to express specific genes in a spatially restricted and temporally-regulated manner in specific brain structures. More recently, the lab pioneered in identifying the physical correlate of a specific memory ("memory engram") in a specific brain structure. The lab also succeeded in engineering the neurons holding engram with laser light ("optogenetics") to elicit memory recall, create a false memory, and ameliorate depression and a memory impairment in mouse models of early Alzheimer's disease.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED : Seek a highly motivated and self-driven individual capable of working collaboratively in a team of researchers while maintaining independent thinking and initiative. Ph.D. in neurosciences or molecular biology highly preferred. Experience in 2-photon microscopy of live mice is very welcome. Strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills are required. Must be able to prioritize various research goals alongside non-research duties in the lab and possess the organizational skills necessary to effectively manage own time and that of research assistants.
