Position Summary:
The Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of fish or fisheries management, conservation, or governance. The full-time, tenure-track, 9-month appointment will be based on the campus at Virginia Tech, a land-grant university in Blacksburg, Virginia. This position will complement existing departmental strengths in stream fish ecology, tropical international fish and fisheries conservation, habitat ecology and species distribution modeling, genetics, trout and coolwater stream ecology, mollusk restoration ecology, population dynamics, behavioral and population ecology, human dimensions, disease ecology, and physiology and toxicology. The appointment is in the College of Natural Resources and Environment and reports directly to the Head of the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation. Anticipated start, August 2019.
Responsibilities
Effective teaching, support of the land-grant mission, and development of an independent, externally funded research program that engages both graduate and undergraduate students is expected for promotion and tenure. The successful individual will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise with an average teaching load of 1.5 to 2 courses per year. Advising and mentoring of both graduate and undergraduate students is required. Strong preference will be given to candidates who can develop a research program that engages with state agencies as well as national or international funding sources and programs. Participation in departmental, college and university affairs, and collaboration with faculty both within and across the university is strongly encouraged and expected. Researchers who use interdisciplinary approaches and are able to collaborate with a broad range of academics and other stakeholders, including fishers and agency managers, are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to individuals with an established track record in interdisciplinary fish or fisheries management/conservation research using advanced research methods and a demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding, publish in high quality, peer-reviewed journals, and extend research results to managers and the general public.

1. Ph.D. in fish or fisheries biology, ecology, or management or a related field from an accredited university by the time of appointment.
2. Demonstrated ability and interest in developing and teaching highly effective courses in fisheries, fish ecology, conservation, fisheries management, or closely related content areas.
3. Demonstrated commitment to collaborative research with local, state or federal agencies, foreign governments, NGOs, private industry, or some combination of these groups.
4. Demonstrated potential to attract research funding adequate to support an active research program.
