Position Summary:
Virginia Tech's Laboratory Animal Resources office in Blacksburg, VA is seeking a pool of students to work flexible hours as a cage wash technician. This position will perform routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting. The two vivaria in Blacksburg currently houses rats, mice, and guinea pigs. This position will be responsible for transporting animals to various location by use of the university provided vehicle. As such, offers will be conditional upon a successful driving check.
Essential duties:
•Operates washers and bulk sterilizer equipment.
•Perform routine start-up and shut-down procedures on all cage wash machines, including preventative maintenance.
•Assist in receiving and storing materials, food, and supplies.
•Transport caging supplies between animal rooms and cage wash rooms.
•Set up supplies needed by animal care technicians on a daily basis.
•Maintain sanitary conditions of cage washing rooms and other ancillary areas utilizing chemical cleaners, detergents, and disinfectants.
•Use personal protective equipment as required.
•Process facility laundry.
•Restock animal housing and procedural rooms with supplies.
•Other duties as required

•Must be a student of Virginia Tech
•Clean driving record
•Demonstrated excellence in time management and record keeping skills.
•Ability to read, understand and follow standard operating procedures.
•Ability to lift 50 pounds and move equipment utilizing a cart or trolley weight up to 150 pounds.
•Ability to remain standing during the entirety of shift.
•Ability to work quickly in a repetitive environment.
•Ability to work collegiality with others.
