Senior Researcher - Tisch College

The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life prepares Tufts students to become active citizens and community leaders. The Institute for Democracy and Higher Education (IDHE) at Tisch College, is a leading venue for research, resources, and advocacy on college student political learning and engagement in democracy. We strive to inform and shift college and university priorities, practices, and culture to strengthen democracy and advance social and political equity.

IDHE conducts both quantitative and qualitative research on college student political learning and engagement.

IDHE conducts qualitative case studies to assess an individual college or university s campus climate for political learning and engagement.

IDHE partners with and develops resources for dozens of associations and multi-campus consortia interested in student civic learning and engagement in democracy.

The Institute for Democracy & Higher Education (IDHE) at Tisch College, Tufts University, invites applications for a researcher with exceptional quantitative research skills and relevant experience in social science research. Preference will be given to applicants with experience advancing college and university student political learning, discourse, equity, and participation.

The Researcher will report to the Director of the Institute for Democracy and Higher Education (IDHE) and work closely with other members of the IDHE team. The primary focus of this position is on IDHE s signature initiative, the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE), a national database for research on college student voting. The Researcher will conduct original data analyses using the NSLVE database and conduct other studies on political learning, equity, discourse, and participation. The Researcher will be responsible for quantitative analysis and dissemination, data quality, and contributing to the development of new research at IDHE. As appropriate, insights gained through this research will be disseminated through a mix of IDHE reports, presentations, workshops, publishable academic manuscripts, and other channels to maximize impact on practice.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • Ph.D. with 1-3 years experience in relevant skill and content areas. Relevant fields include: fields: Political science, education, public affairs, civic learning and engagement.
  • Proficiency in statistical modeling and regression analysis, including use of programming and syntax.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to solve problems creatively and independently. Must be able and willing to learn new skills.
  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of integrity while professionally handling confidential data.
  • Strong writing, presentation, interpersonal, and technical skills.
  • Demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with large datasets, querying tools, and/or programming language such as R, SQL, or Python. Willingness to teach others on the team.
  • Experience in developing and co-managing a large database system.
  • Experience with qualitative and/or mixed-methods research.
  • Working knowledge of Tableau or other data visualization software.
  • Knowledge and experience with teaching and learning environments and organizational change in higher education.
  • Knowledge of and experience with community colleges, HBCUs, MSIs, low-resourced institutions, and public four-year institutions.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate an interest in the research priorities of IDHE, among them:
    • Trends and disparities in college student voting and political engagement.
    • Factors affecting disparities in political engagement, particularly among low-propensity voters and historically marginalized, nontraditional, and other currently underrepresented groups.
    • College students development of political efficacy, civic agency, and democratic practices.
    • Campus conditions or practices influencing student political learning and engagement.
