The Position:
Miramar College is recruiting for two (2) Senior Student Services Assistant positions. One position reports to the Dean of Student Development and Matriculation and receives work direction from the Coordinator for EOPS/CARE, CalWORKs, and NextUp. The second position will report to the Outreach Coordinator in the Outreach Department. The positions provide assistance with respective program goals in order to support the access, retention, and transfer of special populations of both prospective and current students, which may include EOPS, CARE, CalWORKs, and foster youth (NextUp). These positions will provide training and work direction to hourlies, student assistants, and peer advisors in order to support the overall functioning of the front office. These positions will assess eligibility for programs; conduct community outreach and recruitment; update student records and coordinate referrals to other on- and off-campus services. Use innovative practices to advance department initiatives and work closely with Miramar College students, staff, faculty, outside agencies, and community partners.

Major Responsibilities May Include:
  • Conduct intake interviews and evaluate documentation to determine the need for services and/or program eligibility; make referrals to other on- and off-campus programs and services.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of programs to help students navigate the pre-enrollment process and the success of students in alignment with departmental and college goals.
  • Train and provide work direction and guidance to hourlies, student workers, and peer mentors in order to support a student-centered environment.
  • Provide information to students; present/facilitate workshops; assist in student orientations; explain program policies and procedures.
  • Assist with recruiting and outreach of students for programs that may include special populations such as EOPS, CARE, CalWORKs and foster youth, but are not limited to these populations.
  • Communicate with students and outside agencies to verify student status and other information to in order to assess eligibility.
  • Establish relationships with high school and community agency personnel for program recruitment purposes; coordinate the development and preparation of promotional materials.
  • Update and maintain student records and files; generate reports; and verify student information.
  • Compile and prepare statistical and other reports and records; prepare correspondence.
  • Provide clerical and technical assistance to program lead and department.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

    Major factors to be evaluated for a Senior Student Services Assistant may include:Knowledge: Academic policies and procedures;District organization, operations, policies, and objectives;English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary;Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including computer hardware and software;Oral and written communications skills;Record-keeping techniques;Rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the assigned program;Student/management information systems;Applicable sections of the California Education Code and other laws; Technical aspects of the field of specialty;Issues faced by underrepresented and disadvantaged students in higher education;Skills and Abilities: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including conduction presentations;Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty administrators, outside agencies and community partners;Establish and meet schedules and timelines;Interact effectively with students and staff;Interpret and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding assigned student services area;Maintain confidential records and files and prepare reports;Make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy;Meet schedules and timelines;Operate a variety of office machines and equipment, including computer hardware and software;Perform technical duties of complex difficulty in assigned student services area;Plan and organize work;Relate effectively with people from varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;Train and provide work direction to others; Type/keyboard at 45 words per minute;Understand and follow oral and written directions; Use computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; ANDWork independently and organize workload with minimal supervision.

    Pay Information:
    Range 19 ($3,265.04 $5,211.73) per month based on the current AFT Classified Unit Office Technical Salary Schedule

    Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Classified Staff Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is FLSA Non-Exempt and may accrue overtime. A temporary probationary period will be applied to the employee entering this assignment.
