Small Animal Emergency Technician

Position Summary:
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital is seeking qualified candidates to fill two separate positions as a Small Animal Emergency Technician. This position provides technical support to clinical faculty and senior veterinary students in the ICU / ECC (Emergency Critical Care) sections of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Assists clinicians in receiving emergency patients, help triage and admit patients. Performs critical care nursing procedures in the Intensive Care Unit or treatment areas as directed by clinical faculty and instructs senior veterinary students in technical and manipulative skills relating to ICU / ECC during regular day shift or after hours shifts. On call and covers ICU shifts, including holidays. Assist in other areas as directed by supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Licensed or licensed eligible in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Veterinary Technician ( LVT ); working knowledge of basic nursing skills; ability to place intravenous catheters; experience in critical care nursing in a veterinary medical setting; knowledge of CPR ; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; must be able to safely move and handle up to 50 lbs.; rabies prophylaxis will be required (provided by employer).

Preferred Qualifications:
At least 2 years experience in a veterinary clinical setting, with emphasis on emergency and critical care. VTS certification in ECC .
