Head, Cataloging & Metadata

Position Description:

The University of Northern Iowa's Rod Library seeks applications for a collaborative individual with exceptional leadership skills to serve as its new Head of Cataloging and Metadata. This individual will lead a unit responsible for cataloging, metadata, and authority control for library resources in all languages and formats for the general and special collections of Rod Library. This newly created, tenure-track position will work collaboratively with librarians and staff in the Cataloging and Metadata Unit, Content Discovery Division, and other library units to facilitate information retrieval. The focus of this position will be on providing leadership and vision in cataloging, metadata, and authority control as well as training for cataloging staff as the work of technical services changes.

The successful candidate will directly supervise library faculty and staff, and will oversee the supervision of student employees. The Head of Cataloging and Metadata will be expected to develop, oversee, and prioritize local cataloging and metadata projects, policies, and procedures. They will collaborate with other units in the library, including Digital Scholarship and Resource Management, to develop sound practices supporting discovery and stewardship of physical and digital collections by collaborating within the unit and the library as a whole. The Head of Cataloging and Metadata will be expected to cultivate an awareness of emerging trends and their implications for local and consortial practices. They will perform cataloging duties such as implementing nationally accepted cataloging and metadata standards, and some original cataloging, and serve on the Dean's Advisory Group and the Alma Primo Advisory Team. This position will report to the Associate University Librarian for Content Discovery. As a tenure-track faculty position, participation in library and institutional committees and professional associations is expected, as is ongoing research, scholarship, and creative work.

Education Requirements:

ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library/Information Science or international equivalent required.

Required Qualifications:

Required qualifications include a minimum of 3 years of successful supervisory experience, with evidence of fostering staff development and collaboration; demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, and project management skills; minimum of 3 years of library cataloging experience at the professional level using OCLC, the Library of Congress Classification System and Subject Headings in all formats; minimum of 3 years of experience with integrated library systems; advanced working knowledge of authority control and bibliographic record maintenance, digital content management systems, and AACR2 and RDA cataloging rules and the ability to share their knowledge with others; and demonstrated outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking, and listening.

Desirable Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced knowledge of the Ex Libris Alma integrated library system and Primo discovery system; evidence of advanced experience working with digital libraries or institutional repositories; demonstrated ability to integrate technology into workflows in language that is understood by colleagues; exhibited familiarity with and interest in current and emerging standards, models, applications, and initiatives such as BIBFRAME, RDF, and linked data; and ongoing commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion.
