Asian American Cultural Center Director

Position Summary:
The Asian Engagement Cultural Center Director reports to the Senior Director of Cultural and Community Centers and provides strategic direction for the work of the center, supervises its daily operation, and provides support for undergraduate and graduate students. More specifically, the Director is responsible for the design, implementation and assessment of a center that supports and advances students' success as learners and leaders. The Director works collaboratively to provide services that are culturally appropriate; that positively impact campus climate for underrepresented and students from marginalized populations, in particular Asian students; that facilitates explicit connections between inclusion, success, and equity; that promotes intersectional work and connections; and that builds healthy communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop programs and events that highlight Asian and Asian American cultures; develop programs and events that support Asian international and Asian American students' cultural experiences. Collaborate with other campus-community partners to develop programs that encompass various intersecting identities (e.g., nationality, immigration, faith, gender identity, ability status, multiracial).
Work cooperatively with directors of other cultural centers to create intersectional programming to expand outreach and student development.
Manage and oversee the Asian American Cultural Center in all its aspects.
Serve as a member of the Cultural and Community Centers Leadership Team
Provide training, workshops, and educational outreach to VT students and campus partners.
Oversee and participate in student and academic programs, including serving on committees, chairing committees, running special projects and working for the benefit of all Virginia Tech students.
Advise and support student organizations.
Work collaboratively with administrators, students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community to define the appropriate identity for the Center, to plan for its support and nurture; to develop services, organize activities, and sponsor events; and to provide academic and personal advising and guidance to students.
Oversee the physical facilities of the Center. Hire, train and supervise staff such as student workers.
Manage the budget for the Center and assist in seeking additional sources of support through program collaboration.
Serves on committees and leads various student and academic programs.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
-Master's degree in a related field and experience in higher education, student programming, student organization advising and student leadership.
-Proven experience in working with students, faculty, academic administrators, alumni and community groups.
-Knowledgeable about issues in the Asian and Asian American communities and a commitment to translating these into a programs, academic partnerships and advocacy.
-Experience working with underserved populations and with intercultural and intersectional issues.
-Excellent communication and analytical skills (oral and written).
-Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills.
-General computer knowledge and experience with a variety of software packages, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
-Ability to work a schedule that is flexible and includes evenings and occasional weekends.
-Ability to work independently as well as a committee member and a member of teams.
-Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with senior administrators, staff, and faculty.
-Ability to supervise a staff of graduate students and undergraduate students.
-Strong leadership skills and the ability create and lead effective teams.

Preferred Qualifications:
The Director must demonstrate many of the following qualifications:
-Extensive knowledge of Asian/Asian American culture and perspectives;
-Proven managerial, fiscal, and administrative competencies;
-An understanding of academic culture, policies, and procedures typical of major public research universities;
-Experience with academic outreach and community engagement;
-Visionary leadership;
-Ability to garner the support of volunteers and appreciate their contributions;
-Passion and drive for the goals of the Center.
