Position Summary:
Research Assistant position in the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute's
Glial Biology in Health, Disease, and Cancer Center
The Sontheimer laboratory at Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute ( VTCRI ) is seeking a Research Assistant full-time or part-time salaried to work on an NIH / NCI funded research project on malignant brain tumors. The main role of this position will be propagation of human cell lines in culture and in laboratory mice, collection of human brain tissue and tissue preservation. This position will involve significant time devoted to handling of mice and microsurgery as well as general laboratory tasks, including database management, inventory, supplies and reagent preparation. The ability to interact with a number of people (including medical and academic personnel at all levels) excellent attention to detail, independent task related judgement, and communication skills are necessary. We are looking for a motivated person who can work independently to support a medium size research group.

Required Qualifications:
-Excellent communication and organization, must be detail oriented, and capable of working independently and as part of a team.
-Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse, multicultural environment exercising judgment and high degree of confidentiality.
-Previous customer service and/or administrative support experience in an academic or business setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
-B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, public health or a related field with an emphasis on laboratory experience, or equivalent education, training and experience.
-Working experience in an academic/research setting.
