Northern Center Director, 4-H Educational Center

Position Summary:
Since 1981, the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center has offered year-round, research-based programming to the youth and families of Northern Virginia. In addition to its acclaimed camps, the Center hosts a variety of corporate retreats, festivals, team building programs, and outdoor recreation. In February 1976, 229 acres of the original Remount Depot Station located on highway 522 outside of Front Royal were deeded to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for the creation of a youth development center. This center became the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational and Conference Center.
The Northern Virginia 4-H Educational and Conference Center serves 19 Northern Virginia Counties plus the City of Alexandria and reaches thousands of young people each year through its 4-H junior and special interest camps, environmental education programs, and ropes/challenge course programming. More than 5,900 youth ages 5-18 are involved in the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center programming annually. Additionally, nearly 800 4-H teen and adult volunteer leaders support, supervise, and teach those youth. 4-H camping is cooperative group living in a natural environment that focuses on developing life skills, social, spiritual, mental, and physical development in young people.
In concert with the leadership of the Board of Directors and the State 4-H Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension, the director's duties will include operational management, policy development, resource development, fiscal management, strategic planning and other duties as necessary.
Responsibilities include: Oversee day-to-day operations of the Center, including administration, programming, food service/dining, maintenance, building and grounds, and housekeeping. Draft and assemble policies and procedures as needed for the 4-H Center's operations. Oversee the establishment of positions; the development of job descriptions identifying work duties; recruitment, selection and hiring of staff; performance assessment procedures; and other personnel actions involved in the management of human resources for the Center. Provide leadership to the development of the Center's budget and monitor the expenditure of funds; establish priorities to assure that staff members conduct business in accordance with set policies and procedures and that established priorities are met. Secure resources and develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to market the Center to private and public users. Provide leadership for public relations, fundraising, and the creation of long-term systems that will sustain the Center. Develop and implement, a strategic plan and business plan for the 4-H Center in cooperation with the Board of Directors and Virginia Cooperative Extension. Compile fiscal, marketing and maintenance reports for the Center. Work with the Board of Directors to identify and develop new Board members. Work cooperatively with the Program Director to communicate the Center's purpose and vision to staff and stakeholders. Work cooperatively with the Program Director to ensure that high quality educational programming is provided to users in the following priority: (a) 4-H Youth; (b) other youth; and adults. Work cooperatively with the Program Director to ensure that the Center meets or exceeds the American Camp Association standards on an annual basis and that the Center is successfully re-accredited every 3 years.

Required Qualifications:
-Master's Degree required, or a combination of a bachelor's degree and extensive experience, in youth or adult education, hospitality management, business management, recreation management, or related discipline.
-Candidates should have demonstrated experience in hospitality management, education, business management, resource development, personnel management, public relations, and marketing.
-Ability to communicate effectively is essential.
-The ability to utilize business computer applications, email and internet applications for communications and information are necessary.
-The Director must be able to provide his or her own transportation on a regular basis.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with Extension/4-H experience or other youth serving organization is preferred.
-Significant experience in partnership and business development within a non-profit organization setting.
