Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S) is part of the Division of Information Technology at Virginia Tech. We provide advanced network, communications, public safety, cable television, and data center services. We design, deploy and operate enterprise scale, high-performance computing and communications networks. Although not limited to the following, the position's responsibilities will include:
Perform routine system and storage administration tasks
Develop, enhance, and maintain tools or scripts to assist in provisioning, administration, and performance monitoring
Maintain current certification(s) and participate in training sessions as defined in employee's professional development plan
Contribute to slightly complex aspects of a project
Work on multiple projects simultaneously with limited resources and short timelines
Willing and able to learn new technologies and skillsets, to accept increasingly difficult assignments and to grow professionally
Utilize existing policies, processes and best practices to ensure operational excellence and efficient work flow
Participate in project planning
Develop solutions to meet business requirements
Create and maintain documentation of functions and changes

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in STEM field or equivalent level training or experience in a related field
Self motivation with the ability to work independently under close supervision as well as the ability to work in a team environment
Strong interpersonal and organizational communications skills
Familiar with agile methodologies
Working knowledge of Unix systems, system administration tools, methodologies, and security practices, including remote access and protocols
Experience troubleshooting software and hardware system errors and the ability to analyze a wide range of system related problems
Working knowledge of storage concepts, deployment and administration
Working knowledge of network functionality and security

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in STEM field or equivalent level training or experience in a related field
Demonstrated ability to write scripts or code
Experience with Redhat/CentOS or other RPM based distributions
Experience with version control systems
Experience with configuration management systems
Experience with advanced storage systems ( NAS , SAN , parallel file systems)
Experience with modern platform solutions (virtualization, containers, cloud)
