We are looking for an Assistant Dean of Community Standards to join the Office of Student Affairs. The Assistant Dean will play an important role in coordinating the campus response to alleged violations of the Student Honor Code. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean will oversee and administer all aspects of the Honor Board system and providing a philosophical, developmental, and educational context for student community standards.

The Assistant Dean will ensure that students accused of violating the Honor Code are given a fair hearing that is both educational and balanced between the needs of the student and the needs of those who were affected. The Assistant Dean will be responsible for and will drive a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, creating an environment free from bias, prejudice and discrimination.

The Simmons College Honor Code is intended to inform students, and members of the College's community who work with them, of students' rights and responsibilities during their association with the institution and to provide general guidance for enforcing those regulations and policies essential to the educational mission of the College. The Assistant Dean of Community Standards performs duties as outlined by the Simmons Honor Board.


The Office of Student Affairs provides advocacy and develops programs and services that support students' academic and personal development. Staff members assess the needs of a changing student body and initiate programs that respond to those needs.

Responsibilities:

Program Management
  • Develop, implement, and interpret policies and rules governing all students under the College's Student Honor Code
  • Oversee and coordinate the Simmons Honor Board
  • Serve as the primary disciplinary officer for the College
  • Ensure a consistent procedural due process for students through the use of the code of conduct
  • Prepare and present annual reports and trend reports
  • Respond to emergency discipline and crisis response situations and serve in the Administrator on Call duty rotation
  • Manage the Student Honor Code, including updates and revisions
  • Maintain and use the Maxient Software database as a system of record for student conduct cases
  • Ensure compliance with legal, financial, College policies and external regulations including but not limited to FERPA, Title IX, and the Clery Act

Education and Outreach
  • Provide leadership and training on resolving conduct cases
  • Educate faculty, staff, students, parents and other third-parties about community expectations, ethical decision-making, the disciplinary process, and the student conduct process
  • Represent the Office of Student Affairs on various committees and attends meetings and national and local conferences as appropriate
  • Coordinate Honor Board recruitment and training
  • Consult and collaborate with faculty and staff regarding issues of student conduct
  • Serve as a resource for students, staff, faculty, parents and other third-party vendors

Student Advising and Case Management:
  • Direct conduct cases and ensure that all conduct referrals are addressed in a consistent and timely manner through appropriate College procedures
  • Oversee and adjudicate Honor Board cases, including reviewing incidents and violations, meeting with students involved, making needed referrals, and tracking applicable paperwork
  • Maintain confidential student records and prepare statistical data reports
  • Manage student conduct cases day to day, on and off campus, including formal incident reports, student complaints, and other forms of documentation.
  • Implement sanctions of students and/or student organizations
  • Other responsibilities as necessary

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Student Affairs, Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education or related field
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • 5+ years professional work experience in higher education
  • Proven ability to manage confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong research and organizational skills
  • Ability and experience in working one-on-one with students, particularly regarding issues where conflict or sensitive referrals are involved
  • Experience in conflict and dispute resolution techniques and best practices

General Qualifications:
  • Strong technical competencies including knowledge of software applications and database management
  • Knowledge of counseling practices and crisis management techniques
  • Familiarity with the unique needs of diverse adult learners
  • Experience creating and implementing training programs
