Assistant Director of Communications, NCR

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President for the NCR and the Senior Assistant Vice President for University Relations, the Assistant Director of Communications will work with University Relations, campus communications offices including colleges, units and institutes to plan, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive communications and marketing program to raise the awareness of Virginia Tech in the NCR , both the NCR presence and the overall relevance of VT to the NCR region. Align those activities with university wide communications, marketing and branding initiatives. The assistant director will have progressive experience in today's communications fields, which includes evidence of strong writing and editing, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and marketing skills; proficiency in using a variety of communications tools and platforms, content management systems, and social media and associated analytics; must also have a strong understanding of effective graphic design and branding principles and the use of the Internet as a medium of targeted marketing and communication; ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment. The assistant director is member of the NCR advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals related to communications, fundraising, and alumni engagement, and will support the communications needs for the Vice President in the NCR and the area programs including student recruitment efforts.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree and relevant experience or master's degree.
• Excellent writing and editing skills for a broad range of applications, including media releases, social media, brochures, news and magazine articles, web content, special event programs, and speech writing.
• Ability to cooperate and enhance government and community relations.
• Outstanding interpersonal and information management skills.
• Ability to work in a matrix management environment geographically separated from the direct supervisor.
• Ability to handle multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
• Demonstrated experience in communications or marketing.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and evaluate a comprehensive communications program.
• Ability to use metrics and data-driven decision making to determine communications strategy.
• Ability to monitor, measure and report on effectiveness of communications.
• Ability to leverage university platforms and practices to deliver customized and tracked messages to specific segmented audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in a higher education, research institute, independent school, or non-profit environment.
• Strong skills using technology in the workplace; familiarity with content management systems, web platforms, social media competencies to include analytics.
• Demonstrated experience leading people, either as a supervisor, a colleague collaborating with others, or both; as well as experience working in a matrixed- management environment.
• Experience working with a variety of creative communications, data analytics, digital content management, and web content management software platforms.
• Extensive experience in media relations, publications, marketing communications or advertising.
• Knowledge of Virginia Tech programs.
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural setting.
