Digital Production Services Manager

Under the direction of the Head of Digital Collections and Curation Services, the Digital Production Services Manager leads the operations of the Digital Production Center (DPC), a specialized unit which creates digital surrogates of primary resources from Duke University Libraries collections for the purposes of preservation and access. The Digital Production Services Manager schedules digitization projects, implements service models, reports on section statistics, manages digitization specialists plus student workers and temporary staff, and carries out selected digitization projects.  S/he also collaborates with colleagues across the library to complete digitization projects successfully.  The Digital Production Center is equipped to handle still image, audio and video tape formats as well as books through the Internet Archive’s Scribe program (https://library.duke.edu/about/digital-production-center).

Responsibilities

Manage the Digital Production Center (DPC) – 60%

  • Creates estimates and projections for new and potential projects related to grant proposals, donors, or other digitization initiatives
  • Plans, implements, manages, and assesses digitization workflows and services (includes still image, audio, video, multispectral and any new start up imaging services)
  • Provides analysis on department activity, including statistical reports and post-mortem analysis of completed projects
  • Liaises with colleagues in Digital Strategies and Technology division, the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Conservation Services and others across Duke University Libraries on a wide variety of projects and to support DPC operations
  • Maintains digitization vendor relationships
  • Manages DPC facilities and coordinates (as well as participates in) tours
  • Creates and maintain internal and external documentation in collaboration with DPC staff
  • Participates in the Digital Collections Implementation Team, coordinates MSI team, and serves on other committees as needed
  • Contributes to and assist in the coordination of digital collections outreach
  • Coordinates closed captioning / transcription vendor requests
  • Monitors channels for professional communication; networks with professionals outside the University; participates in activities to stay informed about trends in library digitization
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Digital Production – 40%

  • Oversees management of individual digitization projects within the DPC, including: assessing materials to be digitized for condition and processing needs; providing estimates for project timelines; contributing to decisions about project implementation; communicating with stakeholders, project partners, and vendors; training, monitoring, and providing direction to students and other staff assisting with projects 
  • Creates digital resources from a variety of source materials and media, following tiered guidelines for imaging, file sizes, and storage of digital objects; adheres to established file movement strategies to enable creation of metadata, access, and long-term archiving
  • Identifies potential conservation issues and consults with the Head of Conservation Services or members of that department regarding special handling requirements, intervention, and repairs; uses proper handling techniques to minimize damage during imaging

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises and evaluates Digital Production Center staff (currently 3 FTE) and occasional temporary staff and/or interns
  • Hires and supervise undergraduate student employees

Qualifications

Education:
Required: BA/BS or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Preferred: Master’s degree in Information or Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or a relevant advanced degree.

Experience:
Required:

  • Experience operating or managing digitization equipment, tools, software and workflows (scanner drivers, photoshop, batch image processing, color calibration) in support of large or complex digitization projects
  • Supervisory experience, project leadership and/or experience directing the work of colleagues regardless of reporting relationships
  • Project management experience, with demonstrated ability to plan and execute workflows, track progress and costs, manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines and objectives
  • Knowledge of and/or experience executing digitization standards for cultural heritage institutions;

broad knowledge of the phases in a digitization project, including the selection, digitization, metadata, publication and publicizing of materials

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to adapt to change, analyze and solve problems; take initiative to find creative solutions;
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, as a member of a team, and partner collaboratively with colleagues across different departments and areas of expertise
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service

Preferred:

  • Experience with Phase One, Zeutschel, Fujitsu, Hasselblad, Epson and Nikon capture devices
  • 2 or more years supervisory experience managing and evaluating full time staff
  • 2 or more years project management experience
  • Experience working in a library
  • Experience using asset management tools
  • Knowledge of audio and video digitization standards and practices
  • Working knowledge of technical and/or descriptive metadata standards (Dublin Core, EAD and/or METS)
  • Working knowledge of digital repository systems, especially Samvera, Hyrax, Dspace

Salary and Benefits

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes 15 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
