Job Description Summary

The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology of the College of Agriculture at Auburn University is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor- Insect Vector Borne Plant Diseases. This faculty position will be a nine-month, tenure-track position with a 75% research and 25% teaching appointment. The projected start date is August 16, 2019.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a nationally recognized program on fundamental aspects of the mechanisms of interactions of insect vectors with plant pathogens. The successful candidate will lead a vigorous research program on understanding insect vector biology, plant pathogen(s), and interaction(s) between insect vector(s) and plant pathogens associated with crops of agricultural importance for Alabama and the U.S. The successful candidate will use diverse approaches such as molecular biology, genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and population genetics to understand the molecular mechanisms associated with insect vectors and plant pathogens. A candidate with state of the art skills in molecular biology, next generation sequencing, comparative genomics and bioinformatics, genetic manipulations, and statistical analyses to understand insect vector borne plant diseases will be appropriate for this position. The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funding to support programs and summer salary, publish refereed and technical articles, and collaborate effectively with departmental faculty and colleagues in related disciplines. Teaching responsibilities include providing instruction support and expertise in the areas of entomology, IPM , and biotechnology and primary instruction in one to two classes per academic year. The successful candidate would also be expected to recruit, train, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students. Departmental, college, and university committee service is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Entomology and/or a related discipline by the expected position start date from an accredited institution. Candidates should have a strong entomological foundation with knowledge and background in insect vector biology, plant pathogens, vector/pathogen/host interactions. Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research and teaching resulting in peer-reviewed publications is required. Candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues across disciplines and develop a collaborative research program. The successful candidate must possess excellent written and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with diverse audiences. The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include post-doctoral experience, grant writing experience, as well as familiarity with molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology and genomic approaches.
