Postdoctoral Associate

Position Summary:
The laboratory of Steven Poelzing, Ph.D. at the Virginia Tech Carillion Research Institute is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate in the area of cardiac electrophysiology and biophysics. Dr. Poelzing's group uses high-resolution optical mapping, isolated cellular electrophysiological measurements, and immunohistochemistry to determine the mechanisms of non-gap junction-mediated conduction and its dependence on Cx43 and the gap junction. In particular, Dr. Poelzing is seeking to determine how pathological insults such as cardiac inflammation and edema modulate the risk of sudden death in the young and how age changes this relationship.
The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated experience in electrophysiologic measurements and preference will be giving to candidates with training in engineering, particularly signal processing, physics, or mathematics. A postdoctoral associate will also be responsible for:
1. Research Conceptualization - With the guidance of the PI, take a lead role in the design of experiment methodology and methods.
2. Research Publications - Preparation of text, tables, and graphical information
as appropriate for dissemination in peer-reviewed publications, or presentation at
professional conferences or in book chapters.
3. Data Analysis - Analyzing the findings from research methods and transforming the results into formats appropriate for dissemination in peer reviewed publications or conference presentations or in formats that engender further analysis.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, or equivalent. A record of research excellence as indicated by peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Demonstrated experience in electrophysiologic quantification techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:
Training in biomedical engineering, particularly signal processing, physics, or mathematics is desired.
