Research Specialist

Position Summary:
The individual in this position will primarily manage field research for the soybean breeding and genetics program, and will be responsible for completing tasks required of the field research and, is required to report to the supervisor timely. The individual will be responsible for managing the breeding database using Agrobase software, driving and maintaining farm equipment such as tractors and planter, packaging, organizing, and planting seed in the field; Labeling, maintaining, and treating the field tests with fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide; collecting observational data throughout the season; harvesting and managing large quantities of seed, and collecting data on yield and other traits throughout the winter; and completing pollinations during the field season. The individual will be responsible for shipping seed for analysis, for planting in trials run by other programs, and to those who request germplasm. The individual will oversee seasonal and student employees working in the field program in Blacksburg. The individual will be wholly responsible for the management and execution of the field program in Blacksburg, and will oversee, assist and coordinate with people at Research and Extension Centers.

Required Qualifications:
B.S. degree and/or experience in crop production and research; Ability to use computer software Agrobase; Good communication skills; Ability to operate and maintain farm equipment, such as tractors and research planters, and fix minor mechanical problems; Ability to plan, organize, and execute projects independently, and to oversee others; Ability and availability to work flexible hours in Blacksburg and at Research and Extension Centers in Eastern Virginia and Northern Piedmont during critical periods, such as planting and harvesting seasons, and to perform strenuous work under adverse environmental conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. degree and/or extensive research experience in crop production and research, use of computer programs, and public speech experience; Must have or obtain a pesticide applicator's license and commercial driver's license within 6 months of employment.
