Grants and Contracts Coordinator

Position Summary:
The Grants and Contracts Coordinator will provide financial services and grant administration for externally and internally funded grants and contracts for the department of Mining and Minerals Engineering while directly supporting the Center for Advanced Separation Technologies ( CAST ). This role serves as the liaison between faculty and the Office of Sponsored Programs by providing assistance and oversight with policies and procedures concerning sponsored research. This position is required to manage multiple time-sensitive issues, exercise judgment within defined policies and procedures, and determine appropriate action required in order to bring funding to fulfillment. This role will routinely monitor, track, analyze and report on the financial status of research projects including grants, contracts, and other sponsored agreements. Tasks also include lifecycle award management, payroll administration and effort planning, monitoring fiscal actions to ensure grant funds are spent appropriately and timely, interpreting/disseminating programmatic information regarding the terms of the agreement, and auditing each sponsored fund to ensure compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and guidelines.
This position reports directly to the Business and Operations Manager, serving as the subject matter expert on pre and post award issues for CAST .

Required Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree in finance or significant training and or experience which equates to an advanced degree.
-Demonstrated financial and/or administrative experience in support of research.
-Significant experience and in-depth knowledge of federal and non-federal regulations and guidelines, cost principles, uniform administrative requirements for grants and audits of states, local governments, and non-profit organizations.
-Demonstrated experience in the submission, management and/or negotiation of complex grants and contracts.
-Demonstrated experience in setting priorities, managing tasks, and meeting deadlines.
-Demonstrated leadership, independent initiative to interpret and apply federal regulations, policies, and procedures in a university or an agency funding or conducting research.
-Demonstrated experience building processes and strategies and working with faculty to facilitate efficient and effective research administration and/or funding applications.
-Demonstrated experience generating documents and reports using various database and spreadsheet software programs such as MS Word, Excel, and financial database and warehouse systems.
-Must effectively accept challenges and responsibility; take pride in setting and achieving goals; demonstrate a strong work ethic and the desire to work in a student and research oriented environment.
-Proven ability to cultivate positive working relationships, foster team work, and support collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Practical experience in interpretation and application of opportunity announcements and research policies and procedures including Office of Management and Budget Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200.
-Previous experience with Banner Finance, Microstrategy Finance, Summit, Cost Share Tracker, and PAN system.
-Previous experience in submitting large proposals involving complex budgets.
-Previous experience in completing and transposing government budget forms by task.
-Knowledge of state, federal, sponsor and university regulations and procedures related to grants management activity.
-Excellent analytical and reasoning skills.
-Experience with webpage management.
-Preference given to those with knowledge of operations and functions of Virginia Tech's Office of Sponsored Programs.
-Preference given to Certified Research Administrators and completion of the Virginia Tech Research Administrator Certificate (Level I and II).
