Associate Director for Accessibility Services

The Associate Director for Accessibility Services ensures equal access for students with disabilities to all aspects of campus life as outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ); provides academic support to students with disabilities, and to faculty and staff in providing accommodations and development of responses to these students; and serves as a liaison between Accessibility Services and the Counseling Center, Health Services and the Dean of Students Office.

Responsibilities of the Associate Director for Accessibility Services include, but are not limited to, the following:

ADVISING
• Serve as the contact person for all disability-related student issues.
• Serve as an essential contact/advisor to students with diagnosed disabilities, including but not limited to ADD / ADHD , autism spectrum disorders, anxiety/depression, physical and sensory disabilities, chronic illnesses and assorted learning disabilities, and support the work of Academic Advising in the development and implementation of academic support programs designed to foster effective learning for all students.
• Train Academic Advising staff on advising and supporting students with disabilities.
• Provide general academic advising and campus programming as needed; work closely with the other Academic Advising staff to support student advising needs, and to offer academic support to students in academic difficulty.

ASSESSMENT AND PROVISION OF REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS
• Evaluate, verify and interpret disabilities-related documentation from various professionals to develop reasonable accommodations under 504/ ADA compliance; train other Academic Advising staff in the same.
• Determine documentation standards for students with disabilities in accordance with the Association of Higher Education and Disabilities ( AHEAD ) guidelines and as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA , 1990; ADAAA 2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
• Maintain case files and confidential student records in accordance with Family Education Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA ) and institutional policy.
• Provide ongoing assessment and implementation of campus compliance with 504/ ADA requirements.

CAMPUS COLLABORATION AND PARTNERSHIPS
• Participate in campus-wide orientation and Admission programs.
• Collaborate with other offices on campus to support the needs and reasonable accommodations for students.
• Work closely with the Counseling Center, Dean of Students Office, and other campus partners in meeting the needs of students with varied mental and health-related diagnoses and physical disabilities.
• Serve on campus-wide committees.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Higher Education, Psychology/Counseling, Special Education, or related field, and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with students with disabilities (some of which must be at the post-secondary level) required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with academic advising, personal counseling, academic support program development, and supervision of student mentors.
• Experience implementing and maintaining assistive technology.
• Expert knowledge of physical, mobility, medical, psychological, sensory, learning and developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, as well as experience in providing reasonable accommodations for students in a post-secondary educational setting.
• Current and professional knowledge base regarding ADA legislation and case law, including ethical and legal implications of 504/ ADA legislation.
• Familiarity with assistive technology for persons with disabilities and the respective laws and standards.
• Ability and willingness to remain current with changing assistive technologies related to disability accommodations.
• Experience facilitating assistive technology training and use by students with disabilities.
• Ability to manage sensitive information in a confidential and discrete manner.
• Outstanding academic advising skills.
• Flexible, innovative, collaborative, and a self-starter.
• Knowledge of and comfort with Wheaton College's mission, vision, and goals.
• Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google platforms and Student Information Systems (Banner preferred).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
