Upward Bound Project Advisor-Roanoke

Position Summary:
TRiO Programs at Virginia Tech needs to hire an Upward Bound Project Advisor for Roanoke City Schools. This position reports to the Associate Director of Upward Bound. This person is responsible for assisting in program implementation and for providing direct services to the students in his/her assigned caseload based in Roanoke City schools. Periodic performance will be evaluated by the associate director; annual performance will be evaluated by the TRiO Programs Director. Projects undertaken may require approval from the director. This position may help supervise and coordinate the work of support personnel. The project advisor will be assigned to high schools where they will complete the majority of their work. This position is 100% federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
Job responsibilities:
Recruit and enroll required number of eligible participants according to caseload assigned. Duties to accomplish this are:
• Obtain applications and participant profiles.
• Obtain income verification on all new applicants.
• Complete participant selection and provide written recommendations on eligible participants to the associate director and director for final approval.
• Schedule day and time for weekly individual or group meetings with guidance counselors.
• Arrange for and/or provide career education to participants.
• Assist seniors in registering for and taking the College Board ( SAT ) and ACT exams.
• Help participants select and identify post-secondary options. Assist seniors in applying to and being accepted into post-secondary institutions.
• Client Data entry and complete reports including: student services and daily sessions, annual summaries, travel reports and vouchers.
• Refer participants internally and externally.
• Meet with each participant a minimum of one time per month. Develop a plan with and for the participant and document in the record all contacts with, or on behalf of, the student.
• Plan, coordinate and supervise summer program activities and staff.
• Support the Associate Director in the following areas:
• Designing and revising forms.
• Gathering statistical data and information for proposal and performance reports.
• Developing counseling strategies and instruments and interactive activities for students.
Other projects which may be specifically assigned:
•Arrange and chaperone field trips for participants.
•Attend tutorials to assist and/or counsel participants.
•Attend workshops and other staff training opportunities.
•Follow up with graduates to verify college attendance and receipt of financial aid.

Required Qualifications:
The minimum requirement for this position is a master's degree in education, social work, or related area.
Experience working with educationally and economically disadvantaged high school students.
Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with TRiO programs.
Former participant in a TRiO program.
