Job Description Summary

The School of Communication and Journalism at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Communication beginning fall semester, Aug. 16, 2019.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching intercultural communication and gender communication, teaching research methods at the graduate and undergraduate levels (quantitative and/or qualitative), and developing courses related to gender, race, class, culture, ethnicity, sexuality, and related areas.

Tenure-track faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly research or appropriate creative work. In addition to teaching five courses per year, responsibilities include service to the school, college, university, and communication associations, such as NCA or ICA ; teaching graduate-level courses and directing theses in the graduate program.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in intercultural communication with an emphasis engaging issues of difference, with priority given to candidates who focus on race, gender, class, or transnationalism.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in intercultural communication and gender communication and an interest in developing courses in their areas of research specialization. The successful candidate will have taught or have an interest in developing courses exploring culture in organizational contexts, be willing to teach large lecture courses, and have taught or have an interest in developing online courses and/or study abroad opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements/Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Communication with a critical/cultural orientation to the field of communication. Outstanding candidates who are in the final stages of dissertation writing ( ABD ) will be considered. However, appointment to the tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor for an ABD candidate requires the earned doctorate by the Aug. 16, 2019 start date. If the candidate fails to complete the degree by the designated date, the position will revert to an instructor position. The offer will be withdrawn if the Ph.D. is not earned by May 15, 2020. Salary is competitive, dependent on qualifications and contingent on funding.

Applicants should have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching collegiate-level communication courses and a solid record of scholarly or creative productivity or substantive evidence of research/creative potential.
