Position Summary:
The Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences is searching for an Assistant Professor of Beef Genomics. This is a tenure-track, 9-month appointment with responsibilities in research (70%) and teaching (30%). The successful applicant should have expertise in functional and/or computational genomics. Areas of interest may include but are not restricted to the structure (sequencing, assembly, annotation, etc.) and function of the bovine genome, identification of trait-associated variations in the bovine genome, ruminal microbiome, microbial and environmental influences on the bovine genome, bovine epigenetics, or bioinformatics and computational biology. The individual is expected to develop an extramurally-supported research program and generate significant scholarly outputs that will establish a national reputation in their field. The individual will have an opportunity to collaborate with existing faculty working with beef cattle in the areas of genomics, beef production systems management, nutrition, reproduction, and forage rangeland systems. The individual will also be expected to interact with stakeholders in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond. The candidate will have access to the Virginia Tech beef cattle research herd and beef facilities located on campus (Blacksburg), which is in the process of undergoing expansion and renovation. The individual also will have access to beef cattle and facilities at the Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research and Education Center (Raphine, VA), and at other Virginia Agricultural Research and Extension Centers located throughout the state. The teaching expectation component includes undergraduate and/or graduate level courses in genetics and/or genomics. Undergraduate and graduate education and advising and postdoctoral mentoring is also required.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in animal sciences or a closely-related field; A vision for developing a sustainable independent research program; An ability and willingness to develop collaborative programs; and a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate education.

Preferred Qualifications:
Postdoctoral experience; Experience utilizing beef as an animal model; and Grant writing experience.
