Network and Security Engineer


Overview of position: Summary of position's responsibilities: The Network and Security Engineer is responsible for installing, configuring, supporting, and maintaining the College's data, voice and security network environment, determining user needs and incorporating them into the design and overall plan for support. The position organizes and coordinates the activities associated with installation, deployment, and upgrade of software, hardware and network facilities and is responsible for the review, analysis and resolution of complex helpdesk tickets. The position identifies, researches, and resolves technical problems productively establishing root cause and mitigation recommendations to prevent further issues and documents, tracks and monitors problems to ensure timely and effective resolution.
Responsibilities/Duties
The Network and Security Engineer is responsible for:
  1. Support, configure, troubleshoot and update network infrastructure components, including (but not limited to) Cisco switches, routers, firewalls, IPSs, ESAs, access points, software and management systems;
  2. Achieve, confirm, and maintain network security using VLANs, VPNs, address space, firewall rules/configurations, access lists, DNS protection, and web filtering, etc.
  3. Troubleshoots and assures network uptime and connectivity through diverse LAN and WAN paths;
  4. Works in a collaborative team environment that includes system and server administrators, telecom specialists, help desk and client support technicians and department management;
  5. Communicates and reports system status, operational anomalies, problem resolution and audit related details in clear and appropriate terms;

Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree preferably with coursework in computer science, information systems or information technology or industry experience equivalent.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of experience in an IT infrastructure or security team;
  • Three (3) years of experience in network LAN/WAN related technologies;
  • Three (3) years of hands on and progressive information security architecture design and implementation experience in a LAN/WAN Network engineering role;
  • Five (5) years of experience working in a progressive information technology operations network or engineering group;
  • Experience with IP Networking security including DMZ, encryption, IPSec, PKI, VPNs, MPLS/VPN, site to site VPN tunnels, SSL/VPN, and proxy services;
  • Deep technical knowledge of network or systems security infrastructure, such as network or host-based firewalls, IDS, IPS, proxy servers, tap, and/or logging/SIEM solutions;
  • Current CCNA certified;
Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
  • Ability to produce high quality operational documentation, including Visio diagrams, high-level description of the environment, as well as detailed instructions outlining the steps;
  • Strong customer-service skills with high level of professionalism, and ability to work with complex situations;
  • Must be flexible and have the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects or tasks;
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high pressure environment;
  • Keen attention to detail;

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of relevant technical experience;
  • Juniper experience;
  • PCI DSS compliance;
  • Current CCNP/CCDP;
  • Security+ or other security-related certifications
