Assistant Director of Intercultural Learning

The Assistant Director of Intercultural Learning supports the mission of the Marshall Center, which includes affirmation of people's unique identities to build a community that draws from them, and to cultivate leaders who will introduce to the world the value of human diversity. The Assistant Director collaborates with students, faculty and staff to provide a holistic approach to academic and cultural programming, which includes an emphasis on curricular connections. The Assistant Director collaborates with Student Affairs staff as well as the Associate Provost for Diversity and Faculty Development in the development and coordination of intercultural and leadership development programs throughout the campus.

The Marshall Center is one of Wheaton College's academic centers. The center's staff develops academic programs, and provides support and services designed to ensure the success and retention of students of color. Further, the Marshall Center actively contributes to campus-wide examinations of race, equity, and social justice.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Intercultural Learning include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide support and resources for educational, cultural, and social programs, fostering awareness and appreciation of diversity, and promoting the Center as a hub for diversity and intercultural learning from an intersectional perspective.
• Provide oversight of annual programs such as Intergroup Dialogue, theme month programs and Intercultural Pre-Orientation.
• Provide supplemental advising, counseling and referral services for underrepresented students.
• Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Leadership Development who provides primary support, collaboration and advisement to intercultural student organizations.
• Coordinate and facilitate training and workshops to build cultural capacity for students, as well as staff and faculty.
• Develop social media strategies targeting different audiences and constituencies.
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the broader Wheaton community.
• Serve on departmental, divisional and campus wide committees.
• Supervise student employees associated with intergroup dialogue and intercultural programming.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master's degree in counseling, higher education, or a related field, and a minimum of two years of experience in the areas of advising, intercultural programming and training, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
• Demonstrated experience in advising and training with a focus on intercultural education.
• Familiarity with intersectional analysis and scholarship concerning diversity, inclusive excellence, and social justice.
• Knowledge of trends in higher education, inclusive pedagogy and student development.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills.
• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and parents.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to communicate and work collaboratively in cross-cultural environment.
• Strong decision making skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• An understanding of the culture of a liberal arts institution such as Wheaton College.
• Experience in program planning - identifying needs, developing programs to meet needs, and evaluating effectiveness.
• Demonstrated commitment to access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, and comfort working with diverse groups of students, staff, faculty, and community partners.
• Ability to lead, manage, and prioritize multiple projects and tasks to completion.
• Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with the principles, theories, and research in the fields of race theory, social justice education and/or higher education.
• Exceptionally strong skills in dialogue facilitation, organizational management, community building, and relationship management, deep listening, public speaking, and professional writing.
• Competence in working both collaboratively and as a strategic leader.
• Ability to adapt easily to shifting priorities and deadlines.
• Experience conducting training and leadership development workshops.
• Ability to demonstrate a professional, collaborative and collegial work style in dealing with students, members of the faculty and staff at Wheaton College, and with off-campus partners.
• Working knowledge of basic office, communications and data management software.
• Ability to work a flexible work schedule that may include occasional weekend and evening hours.
