Laboratory Technician

Position Summary:
The Sontheimer laboratory in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech is looking for a responsible and well-organized laboratory technician who can independently assist research activities within the laboratory. Additional responsibilities include the maintenance of laboratory stocks, databases and inventory of laboratory supplies as well as the general organization of the laboratory.
The research conducted will be related to normal brain function and diseases of the nervous system. Diseases investigated will include, among others, brain cancer, traumatic injury, epilepsy and Alzheimer disease. The center employs model organisms such as mice, rats and zebra fish.
The range of methodologies used for study extends from basic cellular biology, molecular biology to in vivo multi-photon imaging.
The use of standard laboratory equipment from centrifuges to PCR is essential and knowledge of or willingness to learn microscopic imaging techniques is expected.

Required Qualifications:
• Previous work experience in a research laboratory.
• Ability to manage time, organize data and keep accurate lab records.
• Ability to efficiently use computer software.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication skills.
• Curiosity and enthusiasm for neuroscience.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Laboratory experience at Virginia Tech.
• Laboratory experience in epilepsy research.
• BS degree in biology, biochemistry, neuroscience or a related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
